Contra Costa County, one of the original 27 counties in California, is the ninth most populous county in the state. It has 19 bustling cities and many established urban communities in the unincorporated area. The county's name alludes to its location on the other side of the bay from San Francisco. 

Contra Costa is Spanish for the opposite shore, which reflects the heritage of Spanish colonization, which can still be found in place names like Mt. Diablo. Mt Diablo is the county's most notable landmark and the centerpiece of Mt. Diablo State Park, one of the many open spaces in the county.
 
The East Bay suburbs in Contra Costa County feature single-family homes with extensive yards and excellent public schools. Most county residents live in the affluent suburbs of Moraga, Orinda, Lafayette, Concord, and Walnut Creek.
